The gardens at Castle Askr seemed modest compared to those of Hoshido, but Sakura had learned to appreciate the array of different blossoms that the Order of Heroes had brought back from all of the different worlds its leaders had visited, including several varieties from Hoshido that she thought had been extinct for generations, reduced to sketches in her books.

She almost did not see Elise walking up to her until the Princess of Nohr said, puffing up her cheeks, "There are days when I think the Askrans spent more time celebrating holidays from other worlds than they do going out and fighting." She paused. "I mean, that's not a bad thing, it's just ... not very unproductive when you consider what we're supposed to be doing."

"No, I understand what you mean." Sakura nodded. "Is Commander Anna still trying to get you to buy 'something for that certain someone' from her shop? Or is she too busy trying to get Alfonse and Sharena to try on costumes?"

"Both," Elise said, sitting next to Sakura on the stone bench she had occupied. "If she were a juggler, she'd be keeping a dozen different balls in the air." She smoothed her skirts. "But I did spend a little money. I mean, I couldn't help but get caught up in the spirit of things, just a bit."

Sakura smiled. "A little chocolate to keep for yourself? That's what I thought about doing." She blushed. "Because I spent a little money on a box of it, too."

"Really?" Elise grinned. "Because Anna made me promise not to buy any unless I gave it to someone. She said it'd be bad luck if I didn't use it in the spirit for which it was made. And she had that look on her face. You know the one."

"I do." Sakura suppressed a shiver. "So ... what are you going to do with it? Do you think you'll give it to Effie when you get back? I think she'd love it."

"I thought about it." Elise looked up at the sky. "Because you're right. She would. But I think we're only supposed to give this chocolate to someone if we ... think of them a certain way." Her turn to blush. "And, I mean, I would give them to Effie, but I don't know if that's how she sees me." Her blush intensified, and she changed the subject. "But you said you've got chocolate, too! Who do you think's going to get your box? Maybe Hana?"

"I'd ... be lying if I said I hadn't thought about it." Sakura folded her hands in her lap to keep herself from fidgeting. "Because I'm pretty sure she's thought about it, she just stops herself whenever she's about to admit it because she's afraid she'll cross some invisible line between being my retainer, being my friend, and being ... more. I just wish she'd make up her mind." She looked at Elise. "You don't have that situation with Effie?"

"Effie's not the easiest person in the world to read," Elise grumped, "and I don't think she'd drop any hints, even if she knew how. That's just how she is." She sighed. "Neither her nor Hana are here with us, anyway. What to do?"

Sakura looked down at her lap. "What to do, indeed?" Her blush returned. "Well, if you've got chocolate, and I've got chocolate, we could –"

"– exchange it?" Elise completed the question. "Well, we certainly could, but what would that say about the two of us?" She averted her gaze. "Not ... that I'd mind, but you might not even be the same Sakura I know, and I might not be your Elise. What if we go back to our worlds and end up being strangers?"

"Then that's the kind of thing we'd have to worry about after we get back," Sakura admitted, "but that's not going to happen any time soon. There's too much left for us to do as members of the Order. So –" She took a deep breath. "– I respect you enough to give you my chocolate as a token of how close the two of us have been able to become in our time here. Even if it doesn't last, I'd be willing to try ... with you, Elise." Her face turned as red as her hair. "Don't let me be the only one talking! I've said so much already!"

"Sharena's right: You're adorable when you're flustered." Elise took her by the hands. "That being said, I mean –" She paused. "– I feel the same way. I think. I mean, it's something that's pretty new to both of us, isn't it?" She blushed to her blonde roots. "You're a safe person. I'd be willing to learn along with you. Because I trust you. So ... take my chocolate!" She fished the small box from a pouch on her belt. "Here. I'll give you mine first."

"All right." Sakura smiled, nodded, and accepted the box before producing hers from a small bag she had next to her on the bench. "And here's mine, too."

"Thank you." Elise held the box in her lap. "So, if I understand what the custom means, this basically means that we're girlfriends now. Right?"

"Well –" Sakura set aside the box that Elise had given her. "– if we're both sure, I think there's one more thing that we're supposed to do to follow it up."

"And that's – ?" Sakura kissed her once on the cheek, and puffs of steam would have shot from both of her ears if that had been physically possible.

"That's that." Sakura grinned. "Happy Valentine's Day, Elise."

Elise kissed her on the cheek in turn. "Yes, it is, isn't it?"

END.
