Note: Part nine of a ficlet series starting here. The title is a callback to the first ficlet's title. I wrote this earlier this week but am posting it a little late.

The sun shifts higher overhead, indicating they’ve spent long enough sitting by the stream. The water seems to calm Silque, and when their knees brush Faye isn’t eager to leave, even if she’s lost track of the trysts Silque is describing among their old friends. It only brings to mind one question.

“Have you ever kissed anyone, Silque?”

“Oh? Have you finally acquired a taste for gossip?”

Faye kicks her feet, splashing half-heartedly. The few drops that hit Silque’s ankle only widen her grin. “I just want to know.”

“Yes, I have. A friend from Novis and I shared something in our younger days, and a merchant’s daughter would visit from time to time. The island was isolated otherwise, but most of us who lived there grew quite close.” Silque gazes into the water, where her finger trips trail absently.

“Do you miss them?”

“Yes. Many cherished friends are now scattered. But it is all right. I am better for knowing them, and I am accustomed to wandering.”

Neither her voice nor face holds a trace of bitterness, though Faye has glimpsed the lonely parts of Silque. She doesn’t know how to reach them without prying at wounds, and her mind turns to Silque in some cleric or merchant’s embrace, beneath a palm tree or on a ship’s bow. She’s not sure if she’s jealous of the girls or Silque. Since childhood she pined over a love that went nowhere, and Silque must know the implication, as she doesn’t return the question.

Instead, she shakes the water off of her hand and leans toward Faye. “Would you like to try?”

“To try—right now?” That’s not what she meant, Faye thinks before Silque nods. Though she’s smiling, the mischief is gone from her eyes, replaced with an intensity that makes Faye’s breath catch in her throat. Words get stuck behind it. She reaches for Silque’s damp fingers in silent plea.

Silque’s eyes shut as she moves closer. Faye’s are wide open, her heart and mind racing to recollect everything she’s ever heard and read and dreamed about pleasing a partner. It’s all a fog. She squeezes Silque’s fingers and presses forward eagerly.

When her nose mashes against Silque’s, Faye yelps and tumbles toward the stream. A hand at her waist steadies her, though she still feels like she’s falling, about to be carried away by the current.

Silque laughs. When she catches Faye’s expression, she cuts off and rubs Faye’s hand with her thumb. “It’s all right. I almost tipped a girl off a pier once. We’ll try again, if you would like.”

Again? Faye’s brain fizzles and melts. She thought she had one chance, and she—

“Yes,” she says, louder than she meant to. Quietly Silque laughs again, her thumb and fingertips tilting Faye’s jaw to guide her.

This time, softness meets her chapped lips, refreshing her like a hot bath. As the kiss deepens, Faye tastes the remnants of their meal and realizes she must also have fish breath. It doesn’t deter her from holding Silque’s shoulders for stability. The hand on Faye’s waist slides up her side, around her back, where it surprises her by clinging to her dress. She parts just enough to study Silque’s flushed face.

“Forgive me. It has been some time,” Silque says. Faye throws self-consciousness to the wind and swings her legs over Silque’s lap, wrapping her arms around Silque’s neck.

“I’ll give you whatever you need. I can figure out how.“

Silque sucks in a breath, waiting a moment before releasing it. “I need you to do this at a pace that is comfortable for you.”

“I can—”

Faye stops when she realizes Silque looks overwhelmed. She scrambles off of her, hovering close.

“Thank you,” Silque says once her breath has steadied. “I can’t remember how long I’ve wanted that.”

“Neither can I. It seems like only yesterday I wanted you to leave me alone.” Her loopy smile belies the barb. Truthfully, the time when she wouldn’t have followed Silque anywhere seems like a distant dream. The words get stuck again, but Silque’s own smile says that she knows.
