* * * *
The village of Mist. Rydia had first thought to return there alone and revisit the ghosts of a past that had become distant to her, but ... she had a companion. Rosa. The Queen of Baron had come to her in private before her departure from that place, offering to join her on her journey. If it had been any of the others, Rydia might have refused, but she had no reason to be guarded around Rosa. Of all of them, she had always been the one to resort to compassion first in talking to her, and that fact that never been lost on Rydia, never mind all the years she had spent separated from the surface world.
The empty house. It had once belonged to Rydia and her family, but it had never been reoccupied. The villagers had refurbished it as a gesture of respect, and they had offered it to her upon seeing her again. Going inside made her feel as though a great pressure descended upon her, and she allowed herself to cry quietly, remembering. Rosa held her. She might not have lived through the fire that had destroyed Mist, that had seen Rydia lose her mother and the life she had lived up to that point, but she had seen enough of pain and loss to offer sympathy through a soft touch, no words spoken.
The tears passed – last vestiges of a pain so old that it no longer felt fresh and raw, only a dull ache that Rydia had come to Mist to lay to rest. But Rosa did not let her go immediately, and Rydia turned to see that she also had tears on her face. What pain did she feel, then? Loss? She had a home, a family – so many things. What could be missing? So Rydia touched her face, as if searching there, and it did not surprise her that Rose leaned in to give her a kiss. Tentative. Also searching. A question, asked by touch. And Rydia kissed her in return. Yes. She needed her. They needed each other.
So many questions remained to be asked and answered, but Rydia had a feeling of comfort and affection – of safety – around Rosa that she had around no one else. The taste of her lips promised a life to come, a life where memories in a dead and silent house would carry less weight than the presence and laughter of the living. They had both fought for that, and it remained up to them to take the seeds that had been planted and help them grow into ... what? No exact answer for that. Another thing that words could not describe, but that a searching kiss might begin to uncover for the ages.
Where you go, I follow, Rydia thought. And that thought spread warmth all through her.
END.
