Notes: The King of Fighters franchise is massive, comprising a number of different series and sub-series, including crossovers, spin-offs, tie-ins, etc., plus anime, manga, one live-action movie (that is best not mentioned), and all kinds of other media. In the case of this particular story, it is set during 'classic' KOF continuity, back in the 1990s.

"And this –" King gestured to the waterfalls that the rain had created to conceal the cave that Mai had selected for their sparring. "– is why I prefer not to train in remote places. At least your cabin has a camp stove." She leaned against the wall next to the entrance, shaking her head and smiling to herself. "Yuri's going to be sorry she missed this, though. The rain falling is the only sound here. Not at all like her dojo at home."
"Yuri's too young to appreciate this type of training," Mai said, shrugging, "and I think she likes being around her brother, her father, and all of that noise. Besides, this gives the two of us a chance to talk about things." She stuck a finger into the nearest of the waterfalls, and it parted around her fingertip as the rain continued to pour. "I'm sure you've got some anger to get out of your system after how that last tournament ended. You're disappointed that we didn't get farther than we did. Am I wrong about that?"
"No, you're not," King admitted, walking up to stand next to her, "but I'm not going to be immature about it. The match could have ended very differently if there'd been a fraction of a second, or even a fraction of an inch, one way or another. That's how it goes when you're fighting. And I don't feel bad about losing to Terry and Joe." She narrowed her eyes, a teasing half-smile on her face. "But I'm sure you're upset about losing to Andy, considering how you two act around each most of the time."
Mai grimaced. "I don't care what Andy thinks. Not after –" She forced herself to pause and take a deep breath. "– but I'm not here because of anything he did, for once. I'm here to train, and I somehow talked you into coming with me. It's a team-building exercise! Right?" She turned on a bright smile that King had learned to distrust.
"That's very Japanese of you," King said, coughing into one white-gloved fist, "but I get the feeling you've got other things on your mind, and you're terrible at hiding it. Which is very not Japanese, by the way." Mai at least pretended to look dismayed. "So. Let's hear it. What did you want to say to me that you can't say with Yuri in earshot? Or are you really that interested in trying to get better at kicking me right in the face?"
"I ... really don't like looking unsure of myself," Mai replied, grimacing again, but also biting her lip. "Self-confidence is very important to the Shiranui brand, you know. It's why I've got to be all smiles when I walk into the ring. But I'm definitely unsure of myself, and I can't think of anybody better than you to help me talk things out. And, failing that, I can always try to kick you in the face. Sparring's fun like that."
"All right," King said, removing her gloves and tucking them into her belt, "I'm listening."
"Do you how I always get mad that Andy just can't seem to commit?" King nodded, since it tended to be one of the first things anybody learned about Mai. "What if I told you that I'm at the point that I don't think it's just him? I'm not even sure I like him any more." She exhaled, shaking her head. "At first, I thought that was just because I've been chasing him for so long, but then I noticed that I'm not really chasing him any more. I'm barely even running in place, at this point. It's pretty much just an act."
"You two still make a great comedy act," King observed, "and I'm pretty sure you'll always be friends, but you're talking like there might be somebody else in the picture."
"Yeah, there is," Mai said, throwing her hands up in the air and glaring at the rain. "And I should be a lot more mature about this than I'm being, but I'm worrying that, if I talk to her about, that I'll mess it up, and –" She caught her error. "– are you laughing at me?"
"You said her." King did look amused, but she straightened up her face before she asked, "So ... who is it, then? If it's Yuri, you've really got an uphill battle ahead of you."
"Oh, no, Yuri's cute, and I think she's always going to be the kid sister I never had, but –" Mai blushed, and Shiranui Mai never blushed. "– would you be offended if it was somebody else on the team, King?" In the distance, thunder rumbled in the clouds.
"Seeing as to how there's only one other person on the team –" King used one hand to smooth her blonde hair behind one ear, a tell for anybody who faced her at poker. "– well, no, I wouldn't be offended. Maybe a little surprised, but certainly not offended. Flattered, too." She winked. "Pretty perceptive, Mai. How'd you guess that I don't limit myself to guys, either? That's one card I keep pretty close to my vest, you know."
"I'm a ninja," Mai said. "Being perceptive's part of the job. So –"
"So?" King leaned forward, keenly aware that only a short distance separated her from Mai. For a second, there was only silence against a backdrop of rain falling.
"I, um –" Mai was definitely off her game. "– I promise I won't let it get weird, I won't let it affect the team, and –" And King shut her up by kissing her on the spot.
Again, only rain, punctuated by the waterfalls and murmurs of thunder.
"So?" King asked again after letting Mai come up for air.
"We'll make it work," Mai said. "I promise."
END.
